Artist Statement
As a former professor of literature and writing, my life was immersed in the poetry of words. Now, as a painter, I am moved by the poetry of the visible and the creative possibilities of different visual media: the rich tactility of oil paint, the transparent delicacy of watercolor, the dusty brilliance of pastel. I enjoy multiple genres. Still life offers intimate observation of ordinary things whose lights and shadows compose an interior landscape. In abstraction, I find a kind of controlled freedom as an image emerges from the color and marks on canvas. Portraiture becomes exciting when a brush stroke or gesture suddenly reveals an inner spark of the subject.
