Aida Abernathy

Aida Abernathy was born in Mexico City and came to the USA to study Graphic Design. She graduated with an AA degree in Graphic Design from CPCC in Charlotte, NC, where she met her late husband Jim Abernathy.

She moved to Chicago to follow her husband, where she worked as a graphic designer in Bellwood, suburb of Chicago. She worked for a gift wrap company for several years. After having her two children, she stayed at home to take care of them, but she always tried to find the time to take a class or two in drawing, painting -whatever was available.

She participated in, and won the Du-Page County Fair catalog cover design for the 1988 State Fair in IL, and later, after moving back to NC, she won the Farmville Dogwood Festival logo design for the 1991 Farmville Dogwood Festival.

Through life circumstances ,she went back to work full time for a large financial institution for 14 years. After retiring in December of 2014 ,she immediately signed up to take painting classes under Martha Beland. She has taken many online workshops and classes and thrives on learning a little bit each day and improving at her own pace. “Painting and Art have become a joyful obsession for me.”

She likes acrylics because of the flexibility and forgiveness of the medium. She also uses oils, occasionally, because she likes the richness of color you can obtain with this media. She loves to paint animals and flowers, but that changes every day. She finds inspiration in little every day life moments and uses photographs as reference material.

Aida has been a member of the Wilson Active Artists Association since 2015. She served as President of the association for 2 years and was the recent Interim Secretary. She has also served as a member of the Wilson Arts Visual Arts Committee for over 5 years.
